Forum Set Up in China for R&D on Mobile Communications Beyond 3G

According to a Xinhua News Agency report, an organization called the Future Mobile Communication Forum was set up in Shanghai on October 17, with the aim of establishing a platform of communication between companies and research institutes for the development of technology related to mobile communications beyond 3G. The forum has 26 founding members, including the international companies Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, Philips, Shanghai Bell-Alcatel, Motorola, Samsung, France Telecom and NTT DoCoMo. On the Chinese side, operators China Telecom, China Mobile, China Netcom, and China Unicom are members, as well as equipment manufacturers Huawei, ZTE, and Datang. The director of the Chinese National Mobile Communication Research Laboratory stated on the sidelines of the event that China will establish a test site in Shanghai for post-3G technology, aiming to offer wireless transmission speeds between 100Mbps and one Gbps by 2010.
